Gimel-les-Cascades is a French municipality with 794 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017), situated in the Correze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The inhabitants call themselves Gimelois (es).
geography
The municipality is located in the Massif Central and is surrounded by extensive forests, the lifeline of which is the Montane River . The Montane also forms the municipal boundary to Chanac-les-Mines in the south . The A89 motorway crosses the municipality, whose exit no. 21 u. a. leads to Gimel-les-Cascades. There are also some departmental roads running through the municipality, including the D1089 (the old route nationale 89).

history
The region was inhabited early in prehistoric times, and the Gallic-Roman era also left its mark here. Gimel and its church St. Pardoux were first mentioned in history in 936. During the Huguenot Wars , Gimel was attacked by troops of the Catholic League in 1594 . In 1974 Gimel was renamed Gimel-les-Cascades .

The coat of arms of the municipality of Gimel-les-Cascades is identical to that of the city of Parthenay and the Lords of Parthenay. The coat of arms of origin (silver and blue stripes) is that of the House of Lusignan from the Vienne department . The Parthenay house was linked to the Lusignan house by marriage. The origin of the people in Gimel is also derived from the Lusignan house.
