history

The municipality has been settled since the Gallic-Roman times, Roman roads crossed here. Corrèze was first mentioned in the 9th century. After the place became a stage of the Camino de Santiago , the city developed around the church. The Viscounts of Ventadour built a castellany there towards the end of the 13th century . After the English besieged and pillaged the city during the Hundred Years War , Corrèze did not experience a new bloom until the 16th century, when Catherine de Medici was the owner of the city. The French Revolution passed almost without a trace and the city continued to develop until the end of the 19th century until the First World War , which demanded a high blood toll from the residents. After that, also intensified by the rural exodus in the 20th century, Corrèze never found its way back to its old size.
