economy
For centuries the place lived on agricultural self-sufficiency; larger cities and thus markets were too far away. In the 17th and 18th centuries, smaller metal smelters and paper mills were built along the Vézère . Nowadays tourism plays a not insignificant role for the income of the place in the form of the rental of holiday flats ( gîtes ).
history
The parish of Saint-Ybard was first mentioned under this name in 987 in the Uzerche copial book . The name goes back to St. Eparchius, or Cybard of Angoulême .
But the settlement history of this region is older. A trunk road that passed here existed in the Bronze and Iron Ages between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as a ridge path that connected the Haut-Limousin with the Bassin de Brive and was used until the 19th century.
From the 10th to the 12th centuries, Saint-Ybard belonged to the Vice Counts of Limoges and the Barony de Bret. From the 13th century to the 18th century, the community was under the rule of the Pérusse des Cars family, but also under the religious interests of the Uzerche Abbey. In the 17th and 18th centuries the community had a reputation for being richer than the neighboring communities.
The French Revolution had - apart from the destruction of the Château de Garaboeuf - no negative effects on the community. So then in 1846 the place reached its largest population with 1636 inhabitants. But two world wars and the rural exodus in the 20th century caused the population of Saint-Ybard to shrink.
