history

Saint-Ybars was founded jointly ( paréage ) in 1241 by the Count of Foix and the head of the former abbey of Saint-Antoine-et-Saint-Pierre in Lézat-sur-Lèze as a bastide . In order to attract new settlers they were granted various tax privileges (exemption from body and road tolls ) and economic privileges ( market and trade fair rights ).

In the 19th century the place had consistently more than 2,000 inhabitants. The increasing mechanization of agriculture in the first half of the 20th century led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows in the 1970s and 1980s.

Attractions

  • The townscape, which, unlike most of the bastides, is not characterized by a rectangular central square because of the hillside location, is enriched by a few half-timbered houses ( maisons à colombages ), which - unlike in Mirepoix , for example - have no arcades covered on the street side . The brick fillings of the compartments have replaced the original ones made of knots and clay plaster .
  • The market hall ( halle aux grains ) dates from the 18th century; the roof rests on brick pillars.
  • The late Gothic parish church, built in the 13th century and expanded in the 16th century, is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Cybard. It has a portal that is covered by an oriental-looking multi - pass arch and a tower in the style of the Tolosan architecture of the late Middle Ages with so-called ' bishop 's hats ' ( arcs en mitre ) as a characteristic feature. In a side chapel inside the single-nave church, frescoes from the 14th century were uncovered during restoration work in the 1960s. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1907 .
  • A lake in the valley is ideal for walks and, in summer, for swimming.

economy

Saint-Ybars lived to a large extent from agriculture in the hamlets and villages in the vicinity; the place itself functions to this day as a small regional trade, craft and service center. Tourism also plays a certain role in the town's income in the form of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
