Mercenac ( Occitan : same name) is a French commune with 363 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , the association of municipalities Couserans-Pyrénées and the canton of Portes du Couserans (until 2015: canton of Saint-Lizier ). The inhabitants are called Mercenacois / Mercenacoises .
geography
Mercenac is located around 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of the village of Mercenac, the hamlet of Pouech and scattered settlements and individual farms. The village is located on a hill between the Ruisseau de Mercenac and the Salat River . Mercenac is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The D117 from Foix to Tarbes passes south of the municipality. The place itself is on the D134.
Mercenac is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bagert in the north, Taurignan-Castet in the east, Caumont in the south, Prat-Bonrepaux in the southwest and west and Betchat in the west and northwest.
history
In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony.
The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Mercenac was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Saint-Lizier . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801.
On June 10, 1944, the two resistance fighters Vincent Garavis and Ricardo Brotons were executed by the Wehrmacht in Mercenac.
