history

Around 1120 there was already a small town around the abbey, which had been founded by monks from the Anjou. During the Hundred Years War the village and the abbey were completely destroyed. Around 1530, glassblowers settled the desert community. In 1569 the community was devastated again in the wars of religion. Only a few glassblowers stayed. It was not until the 17th century that the abbey and parish were rebuilt. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Sainte-Croix-Volvestre was the capital of the canton of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre from 1793 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801. The municipality has existed in its current size since the union of Citas and Sainte-Croix between 1790 and 1794. It has had its current name since 1958. It was previously called Sainte-Croix.
