Caumont ( Occitan : same name) is a French commune with 326 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons , the association of municipalities Couserans-Pyrénées and the canton of Portes du Couserans (until 2015: canton of Saint-Lizier ). The inhabitants are called Caumontois / Caumontoises .
geography
Caumont is located around 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the west of the Ariège department. The community consists of the village of Caumont, the hamlets of Cap du Prat Bediaou and Villeneuve as well as scattered settlements and individual farms. The Salat River crosses the municipality westwards and in parts forms the northern municipality boundary. Caumont is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The place is on the D117 from Foix to Tarbes.
Caumont is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Mercenac and Taurignan-Castet in the north, Taurignan-Vieux in the northeast, Lorp-Sentaraille in the east, Saint-Lizier in the southeast, Montgauch in the south, Cazavet in the southwest and Prat-Bonrepaux in the west.
history
Finds and remains of a grave from Gallo-Roman times prove an early settlement. The castle was built in the 12th or 13th century. And a church is first mentioned in 1382. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Couserans, which in turn was part of the province of Gascony. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Caumont was from 1793 to 2015 within the canton of Saint-Lizier . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801.
