Camarade ( Occitan Camarada ) is a French commune with 182 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region ; it has belonged to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons (previously Pamiers ) and the canton of Arize-Lèze since 2017 .

location

Camarade is located in the north of the Ariège department. The closest city is Pamiers , about 27 kilometers (as the crow flies) to the east ; the city of Toulouse is just under 70 kilometers to the north. The municipality is part of the Massif du Plantaurel and lies within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Natural Park .

The community consists of a few hamlets (hameaux) such as Lavielle (where the Catholic village church is located) or Lézères (where the Protestant village church is located) and numerous individual farms. The municipality lies partly in a plain crossed by the Ruisseau de Camarade stream and on the other hand has a mountainous character with wooded slopes. The highest point in the municipality is the Montagne de Cabanêres mountain . In addition to the main valley of the Ruisseau de Camarade, there are several side valleys through which streams flow.

history

As the dolmen of Commenge / Couminge shows, the community has been settled since the earliest times. The municipality is first mentioned by name in the Histoire Générale du Languedoc in 1002. It belonged to the county of Foix and in the 13th century became the seat of a castleague (châtellenie) to which numerous places in the area were subordinate. The first Protestants are mentioned in 1544. During the Wars of Religion in 1574, the municipality was conquered and completely devastated by royal troops under the command of Jean de Lavallette. In 1597 only 3 to 4 houses were still inhabited. During campaigns by royal troops in the 1620s, the castle and fortifications are destroyed. Recatholization was only partially successful. In 1732 a reformed pastor named François Rochette was tracked down and sentenced. The community belonged to the Mirepoix-Pamiers district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, from 1793 to 2015 it was part of the canton of Le Mas d'Azil (1793-1801) under the name of Canton Mas d'Azis . On November 17, 1943, there was a battle between Wehrmacht troops and resistance fighters in Ponce. Several people lose their lives. In 2005, a regional synod of the Reformed Church meets in the Protestant church in Lézères.

In the 19th century the place had over 1300 inhabitants at times. The increasing mechanization of agriculture has led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows in recent times.
