geography
Carla-Bayle is located about 50 kilometers from Toulouse in the northeast of the Ariège department on a rocky ledge. In the west of the village is the 15 hectare lake of Carla-Bayle.
history
In Gallo-Roman times there was an oppidum in the area of today's municipality.
The first written mention of the place comes from the year 960 when the Bishop of Toulouse gave the place to the Count of Carcassonne . In the 11th century Carla belonged to the County of Foix , which had a castle built there in the 12th century. In the 13th century the church was built, the place was surrounded by a city wall and turned into a fortress .
After the Albigensian Crusade , the place was called Castlardo and was directly subordinate to the King of France. From the 16th century until the Revolution it was called Carla-le-Comte , was renamed Carla Bayle and Carla-le-Peuple , only to be changed back to Carla-le-Comte . In 1879, the name Carla-Bayle , which has been used to this day, was chosen again, referring to the local enlightener Pierre Bayle .
In the 16th century, a Protestant community first made itself felt in the village, which became a center of Huguenot resistance during the wars of religion .
