Fabas ( Occitan : Havars ) is a French commune with 351 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons , to the community association of Couserans-Pyrénées and to the canton of Portes du Couserans (until 2015: Canton of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre ). The inhabitants are called Fabasiens / Fabasiennes .
geography
Fabas is located around 61 kilometers southwest of the city of Toulouse in the northwest of the Ariège department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department . The community consists of the village of Fabas, the hamlets of Bardau and Tané , scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. The Lens River crosses the municipality in a westerly direction and in parts forms the municipality boundary. Fabas is located within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park in the Little Pyrenees (French: Petites Pyrenées). Large parts of the community are forested. In terms of transport technology, the community is far away from national transport connections.
Fabas is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Michel and Le Plan (both in the Haute-Garonne department) in the north-west, Sainte-Croix-Volvestre in the north-east and east, Tourtouse and Bagert in the south, Betchat in the south-west and Cérizols in the west.
history
Glassblowers came to the community in the late Middle Ages. They also built granaries as a sideline. Like all communities in the region, Fabas suffered destruction in the wars of religion. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the province of Volvestre, which in turn was part of the province of Languedoc. The parish was part of the Saint-Girons district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Fabas was within the canton of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre from 1793 to 2015 . The parish has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Saint-Girons since 1801.
