La Bastide-de-Besplas ( Occitan La Bastida de Besplàs ) is a French commune with 380 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons and the canton of Arize-Lèze .
location
La Bastide-de-Besplas is located on the Arize River in the north of the Ariège department. The closest city is Pamiers , about 28 kilometers (as the crow flies) to the east ; the city of Toulouse is just under 70 kilometers to the north. The municipality is part of the Massif du Plantaurel .
The community consists of the village of La Bastide-de-Besplas, a few hamlets and numerous individual farms.
history
In 1249 the town center was built as a bastide . It was mentioned in medieval documents under the names of Bastide de Bellopodi , Pasplans and Bastida de bellis planis . The parish was part of the County of Foix . Later it was ruled by the branch line of the Counts of Foix-Rabat. The surgeon François De La Bascounète spread the teachings of the Reformation. Part of the population converted to the new faith. The community belonged to the Mirepoix-Pamiers district from 1793 to 1801. In addition, it was from 1793 to 1801 in the canton of Daumazan and from 1801 to 2015 part of the canton of Le Mas d'Azil (1793-1801 under the name of canton Mas d'Azis ).

In the 19th century the place had over 700 inhabitants at times. The increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows in the 1990s.
