Nescus ( Occitan Nescús ) is a French commune with 62 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Girons and to the Couserans-Pyrénées community association founded in 2016 . The inhabitants are called Nescuséens .

geography

The municipality of Nescus is located in the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park , 20 kilometers west-northwest of Foix and about 50 kilometers north of the Pyrenees ridge . The upper Arize flows through the 3 km² wooded municipal area in a west-east direction. To the north and south of the five-kilometer-long and approx. 300 m wide Arizetal, the foothills of the Pyrenees rise to 500 to 600 m above sea level. The highest point is measured in the south of the municipality with 680 m. Nescus consists of scattered groups of houses and individual courtyards. The village church stands apart in the Le Châlet district . Other districts are Méras, Guillemot, Le Freyche, Ferranès, Le Ballé, Le Château, Lagrange, Ferrobach and Bardios . Nescus is surrounded by the neighboring communities of La Bastide-de-Sérou in the north, Alzen in the east and south and Larbont in the west.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the beginning of the 20th century, ocher was mined and processed in the Méras district . Six farms are located in Nescus (grain cultivation, cattle and horse breeding).

The mountainous area around Nescus is accessed by the D 15 road, which follows the Arizetal and leads from La Bastide-de-Sérou over the Col de Péguère to Biert im Aractal . In Foix , 20 kilometers away, there is a connection to the motorway-like route nationale 20 ( E 9 ) from Pamiers to Puigcerdà in Catalonia. The Foix train station is on the Portet-Saint-Simon- Puigcerdà railway line .
