Pamiers ( Occitan Pàmias ) is a French commune with 15,675 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) as well as a sub-prefecture and largest city in the Ariège department in the Occitania region .
location
Pamiers lies on the Ariège river , which leaves its source mountains , the Pyrenees , and now flows relatively flatly to the Garonne . Its tributary, the Crieu, runs along the eastern edge of the city .
history
The city was officially founded in 1111 by Roger II of Foix and has been the seat of the Pamiers diocese since the Middle Ages . Pamiers is the constant rival of the town of Foix , which was smaller but always more powerful and which was chosen to be the capital of the department during the French Revolution .

Buildings
The main attractions in Pamiers are the Saint-Antonin Cathedral, whose octagonal tower is reminiscent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa , and the Notre-Dame-du-Camp church .
In addition to the sacred buildings, there are other remains from bygone times, such as B. the "Gate of Nerviaux" or the towers "De la Monnaie" and "Des Cordeliers" (this one is also octagonal).
