Antoninus von Pamiers ( French Saint Antonin , Spanish San Antolín ; * 453? In Pamiers , † 506? In Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val ) is a saint of the Catholic Church . Its historical existence is ultimately unproven and so its life data are largely unclear. Confusion with Antoninus of Apamea is also possible.

Vita / legend

Antoninus is said to have been born sometime in the 1st to 5th centuries in Fredelacum near Pamiers and turned to Christianity at an early age. After a pilgrimage to Rome , he is said to have been ordained a priest . He is then said to have preached the Gospel in Aquitaine , especially in the Rouergue region . He is said to have performed miracles and - because of his non-recognition of Arianism - suffered his martyrdom in Vallis Nobilis (today Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val ) . Some of his relics are said to have been brought from there to Palencia after Pamiers and on the orders of the Visigoth king Wamba († 680) . Nothing is known about canonicalization .

Adoration

Antoninus of Pamiers is venerated in both Pamiers and Palencia; the respective cathedrals are dedicated to him and he is the patron saint of both cities. The partially Visigothic crypt of San Antolín still exists in Palencia , which suggests a long tradition of veneration of the saint. There is also an altar dedicated to him in the Cathedral of Avila . In Medina del Campo a former collegiate church bears his name; he is also the patron saint of the city. Several smaller churches in Spain (e.g. San Antolín de Bedón near Llanes , Asturias ), Italy and France bear his patronage.

presentation

Medieval representations of the saint are unknown; the few modern portraits show him in priestly garb ( dalmatica ) with a Bible and a martyr's palm .
