De drie wensen (in German: The Three Wishes ) is a Dutch fairy tale film adaptation from 1937 by Kurt Gerron , based on the German fairy tale of the same name .

action

In this fairy tale, a millionaire clashes with a nanny named Maria. Enchanted by her friendly nature, the old man tells the young girl that he will grant her three wishes. Maria doesn't have to think twice and first of all wishes that her bridegroom Tino Murante could finally make the long-dreamed career. The millionaire promises Maria, and so it will happen. But Tino is a hallodri, he only has eyes for the opera singer Cora Corelli. In order not to lose him to the diva, Maria decides to become a singer too.

Her second wish is: “I want to be a great singer”. The old man fulfills Maria's wish and as a result Tino now begins to turn to Maria again. After their first gig became a great success, the two young people decide to get married. Now Maria names her third wish: She wants the old millionaire to attend her wedding as best man. So in the end everything turns out fine.

Production notes

De drie wensen , often also run under Drie wenschen , was made in late spring / early summer 1937 in the film studios of Rome and was premiered on December 9, 1937 in The Hague . The film was rarely shown outside of Holland and there was no German premiere.

The Jewish screenwriter Fritz Zeckendorf , who was completely isolated in Hitler Germany at that time, traveled to Rome to film the film. It was Zeckendorf's only scriptwriting collaboration since 1933. Zeckendorf had written the manuscript for Gerron productions several times during the Weimar Republic.

With “I tre desideri” an Italian version of this film was also produced. There Gerron was put to the side by the Italian co-director Giorgio Ferroni .

The film structures were designed by Guido Fiorini , the sound was taken care of by the Austrian Hans Bittmann, who fled Hitler's Germany in 1933 .

Originally, Lien Deyers, who fled Germany with her Jewish husband in 1935, was supposed to play the leading female role, but "she refused for unknown reasons."

criticism

Filippo Sacchi from Corriere della Sera wrote in the edition of December 19, 1937 about the Italian version that the film wants to be “a modern paraphrase”, applied here to “the vicissitudes of a girl with stage ambitions” and “a young engineer with inventor ambitions” but had "neither the fragrance nor the spirit" that this "kind of allegory requires". Sacchi summed up: "Above all, it doesn't make sense to forego the ironic final morale for the sake of a happy ending ..." as the authors would have done.
