San Antolín crypt
Palencia Cathedral

The crypt of San Antolín lies under the choir of the eponymous Gothic cathedral of Palencia , the Roman Pallantio and today's capital of the province of the same name in Spain . At this point there are two high medieval buildings that were built at different times, but have a common function.

description

One is a larger, arched room in the Proto- Romanesque style, from which there is access to a smaller Visigothic vault. Both show a congruence with the floor plan of the Cámara Santa (Holy Chamber) in Oviedo .

The rooms, in the form of completely vaulted rectangular naves, with traversal arches for reinforcement, were probably built as the substructure of a two-story building, to which elements of the Romanesque were later added. They are in the tradition of high medieval Spain, of which there are precursors from the phases of the Celtic Iberian and Romanesque or pre-Christian epoch, such as the Mausoleo de La Alberca in Murcia , Santa Eulalia de Bóveda near Lugo or Santa María del Naranco in Oviedo . The cathedral was later replaced by a Gothic one, while the crypt with the two halls was preserved. In terms of construction, San Antolín corresponds to the Visigoth art style at the end of the 7th century. In front of the pre-Romanesque temple is the old Visigoth chapel from the middle of the seventh century, built during the reign of Wamba to preserve the remains of the martyr Antoninus of Pamiers , a Gallic Visigoth nobleman, the 672 or 673 of Wamba even brought from Narbonne to Spain. These are the only remains of the Visigothic Cathedral of Palencia.

Legend

Pedro Fernández del Pulgar tells of a legend in the 17th century that says that Wamba , King of the Visigoths , brought the relics of the martyr Antolín, a Visigoth prince of Narbonne, to Palencia in 672, where he built a martyrs church. Antolín died in Toulouse at the end of the 5th century . Wamba († 681/683) was the successor of Rekkeswinth from 672 to 680 king of the Visigoths.
