Avila Cathedral
The Catedral del Salvador is the Roman Catholic cathedral in Ávila . It is the first Gothic cathedral in Spain and shows features of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic.
history
Construction began in the second half of the 12th century. The client was King Alfonso VIII. The first draft of the cathedral was made by Master Fruchel (died 1192), who was also in charge of construction from 1172 onwards. First of all, based on the abbey church of St. Denis , the choir with chapel wreath and double ambulatory was created . The nave was not completed until the 14th century, based on that of Toledo Cathedral . In the course of time it became apparent that the proportions of the (very steep) central nave and the low side aisles caused static problems. In the 18th century, support arches were therefore added and the crossing pillars reinforced.
The special feature of the cathedral is that the building has clear features of a fortress and parts ( apse and choir sections ) are integrated into the wall belt of the old town.
Furnishing
The furnishings were co-designed by important sculptors.
organ
The organ of the cathedral was built by the organ builder Leandro Garcimartín at the end of the 18th century and has only been changed insignificantly since then. The Spanish trumpet registers have been reconstructed. The instrument has 32 stops on two manuals and a pedal . All manual registers are divided at c 1 / c sharp 1 .
