Montaut is a French commune with 715 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Pamiers and the canton of Portes d'Ariège . Until the 19th century the community was called Montaut-de-Crieu .

location

The community is about eight kilometers north of Pamiers . The municipality is crossed by the Galage river and the Crieu runs along the western border .

Neighboring communities are Saverdun in the north-west, Mazères in the north, Gaudiès in the east, Trémoulet and Le Carlaret in the south-east, Pamiers in the south, Villeneuve-du-Paréage in the south-west and Bonnac and Le Vernet in the west.

Hamlets in the municipality are called Balayer, Couzinet, Commelongue, Crieu, Janissou, Hôpital, Lansac, Ourran, Peyroutet, Vernou and Vernezes.
