Laroque-d'Olmes ( Occitan : La Ròca d'Òlmes ) is a municipality in the south of France with 2,433 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It is located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region .

location

The municipality is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the valley of the river Touyre at an altitude of about 450 meters above sea level. d. From Carcassonne the place is about 65 kilometers (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction; the remarkable bastide Mirepoix is on the way (approx. 20 kilometers north). The next larger city is Foix (approx. 30 kilometers west).

economy

In the late Middle Ages, Laroque was a center of cloth weaving, which is interestingly reflected in the partly documented road tolls and protection money of the muggers who - as former mercenaries - had become unemployed in the final phase of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and now on others Wise had to make a living. The early 19th century saw - under the aegis of the Sage and Maurel families - a revival of textile production, but towards the end of the century people everywhere preferred finer and lighter textiles than the hard-wearing 'linen leather' produced in Laroque. Even today, textile production for car seat covers plays an important role in the city's economic life. In addition, the city functioned as a craft and trade center for agriculture in the area.

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in 1002 as a vassal of the County of Foix ; towards the end of the 11th century it then belongs to the Vice-County of Carcassonne . In 1163, in the church of Laroque, a contract of reconciliation was signed between Count Raymond V of Toulouse and his rival Raymond I Trencavel , the vice- count of Carcassonne and Béziers . As part of the Albigensian Crusade, the town's castle was destroyed in 1212; Simon de Montfort awarded the place to Guy I. de Lévis , one of his commanders, who came from the Île-de-France.

The time when Catholicism was regaining ground was a heyday for Laroque and in the 14th century several churches were built in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary. The place was largely spared from destruction and looting during the Hundred Years War - apart from the increasing mischief of the muggers.

Right at the start of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598), the city surrounded by Protestant towns was attacked, set on fire and large parts of it were destroyed. The former city lost about two thirds of its former 4000 to 5000 inhabitants and did not recover for a long time; In 1854, a cholera epidemic also killed many people.

Attractions

Église Saint-Martin or Église du Saint-Sacrement
  • The large single-nave parish church (formerly Église Saint-Martin ; today Église du Saint Sacrement ) was a former priory church of the Abbey of St-Sernin de Toulouse . Its tower, transformed from an unadorned square basement into an octagon , ends with a modern - almost crown-like - parapet with stone lily attachments and eight laterally protruding gargoyles; he towers over the place. On the left of the side portal there is a coat of arms carved in stone and a rolled up parchment, which may have been inscribed in the past. The interior consists of a wide nave, spanned by a wooden ceiling resting on belt arches, with side chapels. The apse with its altar and wooden wall paneling , which is broken in seven parts and spanned by a Gothic ribbed vault , is very generous . The church building and a baptismal font dated 1630 have been registered as Monuments historiques since 2001 .
  • One on a hill above the city and about 1.5 km from the center of distant Chapel ( Chapelle Saint-Roch ) was shortly after the end of the plague epidemic of 1548/9 in honor of St. Rochus , the patron saint of plague victims and lepers , built . A city coat of arms is affixed above the entrance portal on the south side.
