Inela Nogic

Inela Nogić (* 1976 in Sarajevo ) became world famous as an amateur model when she won a beauty pageant called Miss opkoljenog Sarajeva (Miss besieged Sarajevo) during the Siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War in 1993 .

The miss election was held in a basement because of the danger posed by snipers from Serb militias.

The contestants held a banner on the stage that read Don't let them kill us . The beauty pageant was taken up by an amateur filmmaker; the material used by the director Bill Carter in his documentary Miss Sarajevo .

The documentary was broadcast internationally on television, it evoked audience reactions that increased international pressure to end the siege. Material from this documentary was used in the video for the single Miss Sarajevo by the Irish rock band U2 with the participation of its producer Brian Eno , which they released under the pseudonym Passengers together with the opera singer Luciano Pavarotti .

Inela Nogić can also be seen on the cover of the single with an original recording from the beauty pageant.

After the war, Inela Nogić was invited to the U2 concert in Sarajevo in 1997, where the band personally escorted her.
