The Ariège is a river in the south of France , in the Occitanie region , with a length of 163 kilometers. It rises in the Pyrenees on the border with Andorra , just south of the Pas de la Casa and flows into the Garonne as a right tributary in the Haute-Garonne department opposite Portet-sur-Garonne near Toulouse . Its catchment area covers 4,135 km², the mean flow rate is 65 m³ / s.
The Ariège department was named after this river.
course
The river initially flows north-northeast, then makes a bend to the northwest at Ax-les-Thermes and then turns almost constantly north from Tarascon-sur-Ariège to its mouth. The European Route 09 follows the entire course of the Ariege times left- times rechtsuferig. The Ariège passes the famous Grotte de Niaux in the canton of Tarascon-sur-Ariège .
