Portet-sur-Garonne ( Occitan : Portèth de Garona ) is a French commune with 9721 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Garonne department and the Occitanie region . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Muret and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Portet-sur-Garonne . The inhabitants are called Portésiens, Portésiennes .

The name probably comes from the Latin portellum (German: small river port ).

geography

At the southern border of the municipality, the Ariège flows into the Garonne . Portet-sur-Garonne is surrounded by Toulouse in the north, Vieille-Toulouse in the northeast, Vigoulet-Auzil in the east, Lacroix-Falgarde in the southeast, Pinsaguel in the south, Roques in the southwest, Villeneuve-Tolosane in the west and Cugnaux in the northwest.

Portet-sur-Garonne has now become a banlieue of Toulouse. The quarters of Portet-sur-Garonne are the city center, Récébédou or Clairfont , Grand Portet and Ramier .

The A64 autoroute in the direction of Biscay and the former Route nationale 20 to the Spanish border run through the municipality and Toulouse-Francazal Airport is located in the west of the municipality .
