history

The community is an old bastide , a city in southern France founded in the Middle Ages and largely built in one go. The construction of a bastide was based on economic, political or military considerations.

In the Gallo-Roman period (52 BC to 486 AD) there was a large and magnificent villa called Villa romaine de Chiragan . It was one of the most imposing villa buildings in the Roman Empire . Excavations unearthed marble sculptures that are now exhibited in the Musée Saint-Raymond in Toulouse .

A pre-Christian necropolis is nearby, also the presumed battle site of the bataille de Saint Vidian against the Saracens . According to a legend, holy Vidian is said to have thrown away his sword here when he was defeated in battle. Where it got stuck in the earth, a spring rises that still bears his name today, as well as a lake and a well.

The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela via Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges leads through the village.

During the Second World War , Martres-Tolosane was the scene of a massacre of civilians on June 10, 1944 by the 2nd SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" - again on August 8 and 18, 1944.
