history
The Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (106-48) founded a Roman settlement - Lugdunum Convenarum - at today's location in 72 BC after a campaign in Spain to secure the route to the Val d'Aran and the Iberian Peninsula. In its heyday, the settlement had around 30,000 inhabitants. In 408 the vandals sacked the place. In 585 the crown pretender of Aquitaine Gundowald was captured and killed by the Merovingian king Guntram I. Many residents were slaughtered and the city was cremated.
Around 1120, on behalf of the Bishop of Comminges , the construction of a cathedral began, around which a new small congregation was formed.
