Parish Church of Saint-Martory

Saint-Martory is a French commune with 981 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region in the historic Comminges region . The place was part of the Commanderie de Montsaunès of the Knights Templar . The inhabitants are called Saint-Martoryens, Saint-Martoryennes . Since 1962 the population of the municipality has decreased from 1066 to the current level.

geography

The place is located 70 km southwest of Toulouse and around 60 km from the French-Spanish border. The historic castle stands on the left bank of the Garonne , at the foot of the rock face of l'Escalère . The place itself arose on the right bank on an alluvial soil ( alluvial surface) of the river. Transport connections are the Autoroute A64 and the former Route nationale 117 , both leading from Bayonne to Toulouse. The railway station is also called Saint-Martory.

Attractions

  • In the Grotte de Tourasse , uncovered in 1891/92, prehistoric artifacts were found. The French archaeologist Gabriel de Mortillet (1821–1898) gave the name Tourassia (now called Azilien ) after this site from the time between the Magdalenian and the Neolithic (Neolithic ).
  • The nearby Grotte de Montconfort , with paleolithic (Paleolithic) finds, has been a Monument historique since 1993 .
  • The place is the starting point of the Canal de Saint-Martory irrigation canal .
  • The road bridge Pont de Saint-Martory over the Garonne dates from 1724. This bridge and the two accompanying triumphal arches ( Porte du Pont and Porte de Ville ), created by Antoine Mégret d'Étigny, have been historical monuments since 1950 .
  • The Montpezat family, Counts of Comminges, built two castles in Saint-Martory, one in the 11th century on the Montpezat hill, the other in the Renaissance period on the right bank of the river (this is a monument historique since 1993).
  • Next to the Saint-Martory church is the Peyro-Hitto menhir ( Monument historique since 1913).
  • The old gendarmerie building shows architecture from the 12th and 13th centuries and has also been a monument historique since 1927 .

Personalities

The French speleologist (cave explorer) and writer Norbert Casteret (1897-1987), discoverer of the Trou du Toro , the Garonne spring, was born here, as was the Franco-Mexican industrialist Ernesto Pugibert (1853-1915), who made a significant contribution to technical modernization of Mexico .
