Arbas is a French commune with 263 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). The inhabitants are known as Arbasiens .

geography

The municipality is located in Comminges , 28 kilometers southeast of Saint-Gaudens , at the foot of the Pyrenees in the Massif d'Arbas and on the Arbas River .

Neighboring municipalities are: Montastruc-de-Salies , Fougaron , Herran and Chein-Dessus .

history

Finds in the grotto Pène-Blanque testify to a prehistoric settlement of the area.

In the 11th century was basic rule that the monastery in Longages shelter. Since 1311 the rule belonged to the local nobility, only the pastoral position was occupied by the monastery until the revolution .
