Arguenos is a French commune with 72 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitania region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ). The inhabitants are known as Arguenosiens .

geography

The municipality is located in Comminges , 28 kilometers south of Saint-Gaudens , at the foot of the Pyrenees between the Pic du Gar and the Pic de Cagire .

Arguenos, together with the towns of Cazaunous , Juzet-d'Izaut and Moncaup, forms the so-called Pays de Thou .

history

The area of ​​Arguenos was already settled in Gallo-Roman times.

Arguenos became famous for the quarrying of white marble in several quarries, which was discontinued after the Second World War .

Between 1880 and the end of the 20th century, the population of the place fell by 90%.
