Salies-du-Salat is a community with 1788 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) known for its thermal springs in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region of southern France and belongs to the canton of Bagnères-de-Luchon .
location
Salies-du-Salat is located on the north side of the Pyrenees at almost 300 meters above sea level. d. M. on the west bank of the Salat River . The place is about 77 kilometers (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction from Toulouse ; the next largest city, Saint-Gaudens , is about 25 kilometers to the west.
history
The thermal springs were already known as sale salus in Roman times , but no archaeological finds have been made so far. In the Middle Ages the place belonged to the Counts of Comminges for a time . In 1958 the place was renamed from Salies to Salies-du-Salat .

At the first census in France in 1793, the place had 621 inhabitants; Salies reached its maximum population in 1975.
economy
As a recognized thermal spa town, the residents live mainly from spa and recreational tourism and its secondary occupations (hotels, guest houses, restaurants, casino, golf course, etc.); Right next to the high-salty thermal springs (320 gr / liter) there is also a salt production facility.
Attractions
The place has no significant sights. Only the church ruins Notre-Dame-de-la-Pitié , dominated by a bell gable , the former chapel of a - completely destroyed - castle of the Counts of Comminges, are located on an artificially raised hill ( Motte ) in the middle of the city; it dates from the 14th century and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1925 .
