Karl von Hess (born July 17, 1788 in Fulda , † October 2, 1872 in Kissingen ) was a German privateer and founder of the foundation.

In his will, Karl von Hess donated his fortune to the establishment of the "Carl-von-Heß'schen Sozialstiftung". In this context, u. a. the Hammelburg district hospital and beneficiary hospital.

Karl von Hess' parents were the court advisor and landowner Johann Philipp Christoph Erasmus Joseph von Hess (born June 2, 1750 in Hammelburg; † November 18, 1825 ibid) and Maria Gertraud (Gertrude) von Hess, née. Wan (c) kel (* 1757 in Hammelburg; † July 13, 1828 there), who married on July 21, 1783.

Karl von Hess' siblings were Friedrich Georg Blasius Bonifatius von Hess (born June 4, 1787 in Fulda, † February 4, 1854 in Hammelburg), Anna Maria Dorothea von Hess (born January 11, 1791; marriage to Baron Heinrich von Buttler on 5 August 1816) and Bernhard Franz Friedrich von Hess (* May 22, 1792 in Hammelburg, † April 20, 1869 in Bad Kissingen).

Karl von Hess' paternal grandfather was the Princely Würzburg court councilor Ignaz Philipp von Hess, who was married to Maria Apollonia von Amling.

Both Karl von Hess and his siblings died childless.

Name spelling

Over time, the spelling "Carl von Hess" has become established. During his research, however, district home administrator Werner Eberth came across some documents, including the will of the foundation's founder, which he signed with “Karl von Hess”. The "Carl-von-Heß'sche Sozialstiftung" decided on January 18, 2012 in Bad Brückenau to keep the spelling with "C" and "ß" due to the recognizability.

The von Hess family belonged to the nobility back to the 15th century. In 1819 Karl von Hess' father Johann Philipp von Hess applied for an entry in the nobility register .

Life

After graduating from the Hammelburg Latin School, the predecessor of today's Frobenius-Gymnasium Hammelburg , Karl von Hess studied philosophy and forestry at the University of Würzburg from 1807 . He then became the owner of an estate that he managed himself in Schwärzelbach (now a district of Wartmannsroth ).

In 1835, Karl von Hess sold his Schwärzelbacher Gut and built a spa hotel on "Würzburger Strasse" or "Würzburger Allee" (today "Am Kurgarten 7") in Kissingen , the construction of which was carried out by the architect Johann Gottfried Gutensohn . The spa hotel later formed today's “ Kaiserhof Victoria ” together with the “Kaiserhof” hotel . The spa hotel was visited, for example, by Queen Pauline of Württemberg (in 1858) and the Austrian Empress Elisabeth , known as "Sisi" , who initially stayed here alone in 1862 and together with her husband Franz Joseph I in 1864 .

On August 15, 1870, Karl von Hess wrote his will, in which he determined the use of his inheritance for charitable purposes. On this basis, today's "Carl-von-Heß'sche Sozialstiftung" was created, which was approved by King Ludwig II on March 2, 1873 ; also arose u. a. the Hammelburg district hospital and beneficiary hospital, an outpatient health care facility and a custodian for small children.

Karl von Hess died at the age of 84 after several years of severe suffering on October 2, 1872 in Kissingen. He was buried in the Hammelburg cemetery in the cemetery chapel, the construction of which he had ordered in his will.

On August 15, 1870, Karl von Hess wrote his will, to which he added two addenda in August 1871.

Karl von Hess and his brothers in all likelihood considered each other in their wills. If there was no will, in the event of the death of a brother, as the parents of the Hess brothers had already died, the surviving brothers became legal heirs. Karl von Hess inherited the fortune of the brothers Friedrich Georg († 1854) and Bernhard Franz († 1869), who had died before him. In his will, Karl von Hess stated his assets as 283,883 guilders , which today would correspond to a value between 7 and 15 million euros .

In his will, Karl von Hess regulated the construction of a burial chapel in Hammelburg as a family grave, the administration of his inheritance, the use of his assets to establish a Hammelburg district hospital and beneficiary hospital as well as the hospital's area of ​​activity. In addition, he set payments from his assets to Hammelburg institutions, such as the Hammelburg parish church , the Bürgerspitalstiftung, the Seelenhausstiftung, the voluntary fire brigade, the commercial and agricultural training school, the Latin school and the old town monastery as well as for the Hammelburg poor and school children. In Kissingen he promoted by will a. a. the small children's institution, the poor building fund, the fire brigade and provided 11,000 guilders for a plot of land for the construction of the later Herz-Jesu parish church . Furthermore, Hess donated amounts for the boys' seminar and the district care institution in the Kilianeum Würzburg as well as for an independent parish in Schwärzelbach (today part of Wartmannsroth ).
