Attractions
cathedral
The church Cathédrale de la Nativité-de-Marie de Rieux (Cathedral of the Birth of Our Lady of Rieux), also known as the Ancienne Cathedrale , was built at the beginning of the 14th century at the behest of Pope John XXII. built. The architecture as it presents itself today is inspired by the Mediterranean . Only the main nave and the portal remained of the original Gothic building . However, the defensive expression persisted; In addition to massive walls, the cathedral also has turrets and loopholes to facilitate defense. The octagonal tower of the Toulouse-style church ( style toulousain ) has three floors and is 43 meters high. Inside, the carved 61-piece walnut choir stalls from the 17th century are remarkable . The church is famous for its episcopal church treasure . The cathedral and various parts of its rich furnishings have been a listed building since 1923
Former rule tower
La Tourasse on Rue de Salles is the name of a fortified house with two upper floors, the name of which goes back to a tower from the 13th century. The city bell still sits enthroned on the east gable of the building. The portal from the 17th or 18th century is roofed with a curved gable.
The house, which has been a listed building since 1990, belonged to the von Marquefave family, who sold it to the city in 1517. It served as a town hall until the French Revolution, then it was rebuilt and used as a prison until the 19th century. In the 20th century it became a theater and later a cinema. Today there are plans to convert the house back into a theater.
Maison Laguens
Maison Laguens is the name of a house on rue de l'Évêché (near the cathedral) that was rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century at the behest of the Bishop of Rieux. The building is dominated by a hexagonal tower, the Tour Valtan . The two tower structures are also striking, on the one hand an elongated pyramid and on the other a bell tower, which is reminiscent of the top of a minaret. The house, which has been a listed building since 1972 because of its facade and roofing, still presents the original three-story half-timbered facade on the courtyard side; the street facade and the portal, on the other hand, date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the building was successively a girls 'school, a Christian home and finally a boys' school. Today it houses the Pierre Hanzel Center , a multiple sclerosis clinic .
Pont de Lajous bridge
The single-arch, 26-meter-long brick bridge Pont de Lajous leads from the cathedral over the Arize and has been a listed building since 1950. Originally the structure connected the city of Rieux with the medieval castle Casterette ( Château féodal de la Casterette ), which was on the other (right) side of the river. At the beginning of the 17th century the bridge was in very poor condition and the arch had collapsed. The reconstruction was promoted by the architect Pierre Monge from 1620, but was not completed until 1683. In 1785 the bridge was renovated. In the past there was a gate at each of the two bridgeheads, but nothing of it can be seen today.
