The Aéroport de Toulouse-Francazal is an airport in the southwest of the greater Toulouse area in the area of the municipalities of Cugnaux and Portet-sur-Garonne . It has existed under its current name since 2012.
Previously it was a military airfield of the Armée de l'Air , they referred to it as Base aérienne 101 Toulouse-Francazal (BA 101). The last flying unit was a Transall school squadron. In view of the arrival of the successor model Airbus A400M , which was no longer to be stationed here, the Transalls had already been withdrawn in 2008.
The airport is operated by SETFA (shareholders: SNC Lavalin (since 2017 Edeis), Toulouse-Blagnac Airport and CCI Toulouse), although part of the site is still used by the Armée de terre .
history
Francazal was Toulouse's first public airport, which officially opened in March 1923. However, the use of the area for aviation can be traced back to 1911.
In the 1930s, the airport was used for mixed military and civil use. Between 1933 and 1936 the airport was the starting point for the " Air France " connection to South America. The company Dewoitine / SNCAM used the facility for flight tests and the Armée de l'air opened their base aérienne 101 Toulouse-Francazal in 1934 .
Second World War
After the occupation of Vichy-France by the German Wehrmacht , the place was used by the air force.
Between mid-February and mid-August 1944, Francazal was the stationing place of the III. Group of Kampfgeschwader 100 (III./KG 100). The group was equipped with the Do 217K in Toulouse .
After 1945
As part of a force reform announced in 2008, the base was to be dissolved on September 1, 2009 in the following year. At the time of this announcement, Francazal was home to the following associations:

- Escadron du soutien technique spécialisé (2E.340)
- Ensemble équipe technique et d'instruction spécialisée (EETIS 63.560)
- Multinational Entry Into Service Team A400M (MEST 01.338)
The remaining processing of the base took place under the name Détachement air 101 in the following twelve months.
Civil flight operations on the previous military airfield began on January 3, 2011.
conversion
The conversion of part of the previous base 101 began in 2009.
In 2014, the owner SETFA began implementing a EUR 10 million investment program that will extend over five years. This includes the modernization of the aeronautical facilities on the 170 hectare site and the establishment of further aeronautical companies in addition to the 19 companies that had already settled there by mid-2014. A total of 1000 jobs are to be created.
In September 2014, the Des Etoiles et des Ailes flight day will take place for the first time .
Military use
The military continues to use part of the site as an army barracks. In order to support the paratroopers of the 1st régiment du train parachutiste (1st RTP) stationed here , the former base is still served by transport aircraft.
Civil use
Civil aviation use is limited to general aviation . On and on the fringes of the civil sector are a number of mainly aeronautical companies, including Atlantic Air Industries.
