Cugnaux is a French commune in the Haute-Garonne in the region Occitania . With 17,974 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Cugnaux is the sixth largest municipality in the Haute-Garonne department.
geography
Cugnaux is twelve kilometers southwest of Toulouse . The place is on the second terrace of the Garonne , around six kilometers west of the river. Neighboring municipalities are Tournefeuille in the north, Toulouse (district of Saint-Simon ) in the northeast, Portet-sur-Garonne in the east, Villeneuve-Tolosane in the south and Plaisance-du-Touch in the west and northwest. The Roussimort brook separates the municipality from Portet-sur-Garonne, the Ousseau , which flows into the Touch , forms the border with Plaisance-du-Touch. The western part of the city is crossed by the Canal de Saint-Martory . To the east of the municipality is the Toulouse-Francazal airport .
etymology
In Occitan , Cugnaux is called Cunhaus . The name is derived from the word cunha , which means wedge . This shows the abundance of forests in the area and the intensive clearing in the Middle Ages. This was a prerequisite for the creation of new building areas.
