Montastruc-la-Conseillère ( Occitan : montastruc e la Conselhièra ) is a French commune in the Haute-Garonne in the region Occitania . It is located 18 kilometers northeast of Toulouse and has 3430 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017).
history
Sicard Alaman, Seigneur of Montastruc, founded Montastruc as a bastide in 1242 .
During the wars of religion in the 16th century, the place was occupied several times. In 1570 the fortress was occupied by Protestant troops without any previous fighting. In May 1590, the Duc de Joyeuses , who was also Governor of Languedoc, besieged the castle with his Catholic troops for three days, killing around 200 people. He cut a breach in the city wall , which is still remembered today by the name of a street, the Rue de la Brèche .
Surname
Montastruc is made up of Mont , which means mountain , and the ancient Provencal expression astruc , which means something like an agricultural team (French: attelage de labor ). Montastruc was given the addition of "la Conseillère" (the councilor) in 1890 to distinguish the municipality from other municipalities called Montastruc in the Haute-Garonne department.
