Castelnau-d'Estrétefonds is about 20 kilometers northwest of Toulouse on the Girou and Hers-Mort rivers and borders the Tarn-et-Garonne department . Castelnau-d'Estrétefonds is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Pompignan and Saint-Rustice in the north, Fronton in the northeast, Bouloc in the east, Villeneuve-lès-Bouloc in the southeast, Saint-Sauveur and Saint-Jory in the south, Grenade in the southwest and west, Ondes in the west and Grisolles in the northwest.

The A62 autoroute and the former National Route 20 run through the municipality .

The place name has been known since the 10th century. As early as the 9th century, pilgrims were offered shelter here on the Way of St. James.
