economy
As in most places in the Lauragais (also called Pays de la Cocagne = 'Land of plenty'), the cultivation of woad ( pastel ) played an extremely important role in the economic life of the wealthy community in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period.
But the cultivation of pastel was given up as early as the 18th century - it had gradually been pushed out of the market by the new dye indigo . Since then, the farmers in the Lauragais have had to eat grain (wheat) and a little cattle-raising (sheep) again. In memory of better times, the Fête de la Cocagne has been held every year on the Easter weekend in Saint-Félix-Lauragais since 1972 .
Several wind farms have been installed nearby since the turn of the millennium .
history
As can be seen from finds (including stone axes) now kept in the Muséum de Toulouse , the area around Saint-Félix was already settled in the Neolithic Age. In the Middle Ages the place was known as Saint-Félix-de-Caraman. In 1167 (or 1170?) Was held in the castle a Cathar -Synode under the direction of Bogomil -Bischofs Niketas , attended by leading Cathars from the region around Carcassonne , but also from the north of France and Lombardy took part. A convention of parfaits (= 'perfect ones') in Saint-Félix is documented for the year 1205 . During the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229), the place must have suffered a lot - in any case, the castle was destroyed, and the town is said to have been re-founded in the 13th century.

- The former collegiate church ( Église Saint-Félix ) is a brick building from the early 14th century in the Tolosan Gothic style with a tower that towers above everything and develops from a cubic substructure to an octagonal bell storey with a pointed helmet. The tower rises above the entrance on the north side of the church, roughly in the middle of the church building - so it can neither be called a crossing tower nor a west tower. The interior of the building consists of a 27-meter-long, 15-meter-wide and 13-meter-high nave with side chapels. After a fire towards the end of the 16th century, in which the original vaults collapsed, the nave was given buttress arches , over which wood paneling in the form of a pointed barrel was placed. Parts of the interior were painted in color in the 19th century - sometimes even earlier. The church building was recognized as a monument historique in 1920 .
- South of the church - in the middle of the main square - is the market hall from the 15th century, resting on 16 wooden pillars . The building was recognized as a monument historique in 1926 .
- Right next to it is a wrought iron cross, which was placed under protection in 1927.
- The facade of the former vicarage ( presbytère ) from the 15th century already shows windows with crossed windows. It has been recognized as a monument historique since 1927 . Immediately next to it is a house from the 15th century, whose late Gothic facade was also placed under protection in 1950.
- In addition, there are remains of the old fortifications ( remparts ), which have also been recognized as Monument historique since 1927 .
- The 18th century house where the composer Déodat de Séverac was born was listed as a historical monument in 1990.
- Only parts of the former castle ( château ) of Saint-Félix still exist; it was probably destroyed by Simon de Montfort's troops in 1211. A new castle was built in its place from the 13th to the 18th century, but it is not open to the public (private property). Donjon and chapel from the 13th and 14th centuries have been recognized as Monument historique since 1994 .
- The stumps of some of the long-abandoned windmills still stand near the village.
- A hydraulic structure located in the plain and a bridge on one of the inflow canals ( rigoles ) of the Canal du Midi were also placed under protection.
