description

Mirepoix and old Tarn Bridge

The 546 hectare municipal area lies in the plain of the Tarn valley and on its north-eastern slopes. The village itself is divided into two parts: a core area on the banks of the Tarn and a second on both sides of the tributary Lauzat. In 2011 two new residential areas were added.

Suspension bridge over the Tarn

Directly from the center of the village there is a suspension bridge over the Tarn, on which the department road 630 connects Mirepoix with Bessières. Due to the maximum permissible load of 19 tons being exceeded on November 18, 2019, at around 8.15 a.m., the roadway of the building, which is considered a sight, fell into the river when it was simultaneously hit by a 51-ton low-loader for construction machinery and a car was driven on. Two people, including the driver of the truck, were killed and three people were injured.

The two-lane bridge was a steel structure with two pylons and was 155 m long and 6.5 m wide. It was built in 1931 instead of a predecessor destroyed by floods in 1930 by the construction company Baudin Chateauneuf , which specializes in bridges and viaducts , was last renovated in 2003 and last underwent a comprehensive inspection in 2017.
