history

Already the Romans settled the area, which some time later came into the possession of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem , the later Order of Malta . The city was founded in 1119 under the protection of Pope Calixte II (actually Guido von Vienne or Guido Count of Burgundy , son of Count William of Burgundy) in the 12th century on the occasion of his election and coronation . The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, around which the town was built, also dates from this period. During this time the order received many noteworthy donations, which is why a Commanderie was founded, which was headed by a private scholar and who was also governor of Fronton. In the 13th century, the city began to be fortified around the Château de Gransac , which has now been built . In 1303 King Philip the Fair made a stop with his army in Fronton, from where he marched against the Knights Templar to destroy it. The religious wars that began in the 16th century and lasted until 1628 repeatedly affected the city and the region. In 1567 the city was attacked and devastated for the first time by the Huguenots . In addition, the population suffered considerably from the bad harvests and the plague.

In 1632, King Ludwig XIII. in the city to heal the residents of the scrofula by the laying on of hands . It was a coronation ritual that was celebrated in France and England from the Middle Ages to the early modern period .

In recent decades, Fronton has benefited from the economic boom in the nearby regional capital, Toulouse, to whose catchment area it belongs. The population of Fronton rose from 2,200 in the mid-1960s to just under 5,000 today.
