Verfeil is a municipality with 3595 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Garonne department in the Occitanie region . It is located on a hill on the edge of the Girou river valley .

history

From 1140 to the middle of the 13th century, Verfeil was an important center of the Cathars . In 1145, Bernhard of Clairvaux preached against heresy in the village , but when his speeches were ignored, he is said to Verfeil with the words "Viridefolium, desiccet te Deus" (Verfeil, may God dry you out). In 1206 an important debate between Cathars and Catholics was held in Verfeil. The Catholic camp included Diego de Acebo , the Bishop of Osma , and Dominic ; on the part of the Cathars, among others, Pons Jourda and Arnaud Arrufat discussed .
