Carpathian Brown Swiss cattle

The Carpathian Brown Cattle ( Russian : Бypaя кapпaтскaя , Buraja karpats'kaja ) is a dual-purpose cattle breed from Ukraine .

Breeding history

In the 19th century, local cattle were crossed with Brown-Swiss and other varieties of Brown Swiss in the Zakarpattia Oblast in Ukraine . In 1973 the Carpathian Brown Swiss was recognized as a breed. In 1980 the total was 203,000 animals. Local animal welfare organizations estimate the population to be less than 3000 animals in 2020. There are no state-approved conservation or breeding measures. The breed is considered critically endangered according to the criteria of the FAO.

  • Weight cows 489 kg, bulls 816 - 1,000 kg
  • Milk production 4,000 kg with 3.7% fat
  • good fattening performance
