Déodat de Séverac's music shows influences from impressionism , but it is particularly strongly influenced by the musical tradition of his homeland, the Languedoc . It is close to folk music, but without making use of direct borrowings from it. His song and choral compositions are based partly on texts in Provencal and Catalan , partly on poems in French, for example by Verlaine or Baudelaire .

His piano compositions, which often have pictorial titles, are best known outside France. These include the En Languedoc , En Vacances and Cerdaña suites . His catalog of works also includes two operas ( Le Cœur du moulin , premiered in 1909 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris , and Héliogabale , premiered in Béziers in 1910 ), three symphonic poems , organ works and chamber music .
