history
The organization was founded in 1934 and was primarily dedicated to thoracic surgery, which at that time was primarily used to treat tuberculosis . The introduction of cardiac surgery to the range of doctors in the SCTS took place after the end of the Second World War under the leadership of Thomas Holmes-Sellors and Russell Brock , who was a pioneer, among other things, in the surgical treatment of the Fallot tetralogy .
organization
The organization sees itself as a self-financed advocacy group for all cardio-thoracic surgeons in Great Britain and Ireland. In the last few years in particular, influences from non-medical interest groups from the circle of patients and nursing staff have also been absorbed.
Annual congress
Since 2005 the organization has organized the “SCTS Annual Meeting and Cardiothoracic Forum”, a congress for cardiothoracic surgeons. Most of the participants come from the countries covered by the SCTS, but the number of international congress visitors has also increased in recent years. The last annual convention took place in Brighton in March 2013 .
