Hello Mary Lou is a song written by Gene Pitney and Cayet Mangiaracina in 1960 and, as versioned by Ricky Nelson, was a number one hit in Holland, Belgium and Norway. The song reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. The version by Rick Nelson features a striking guitar solo by James Burton .

A previous version by Johnny Duncan , Hello Mary Lou Goodbye Heart , did not reach a chart position in Europe. Well-known cover versions of the song come from Silvio Francesco , Creedence Clearwater Revival , The Seekers , Johnny Hallyday , René Kollo , Adriano Celentano , Truck Stop and Manuela . The best-known German version with a text by Carl Ulrich Blecher comes from Jan and Kjeld and reached number 2 in the German charts in 1961. The duo Phil & John only reached rank 20 in the chart placement with the German-language version in 1972, but appeared in popular television programs such as the ZDF Hitparade , the Starparade and the Disco .
