Porta is a French commune with 116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitania region . The inhabitants call themselves les Portaens .
geography
Porta is the westernmost municipality of the Pyrénées-Orientales department and is located in the high Cerdanya in the valley of the Carol River , it is part of the historic Comarca Alta Cerdanya . The Carol is a tributary of the Segre in the catchment area of the Ebros .
The municipality, with an area of more than 6,500 hectares, is located in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park . The municipality borders on Andorra and Spain and on the Ariège department .
The two villages Carol and Courbassil and the border area at Pas de la Casa also belong to the place , the next places are in Andorra Porta Pas de la Casa ( Encamp municipality ) and in Spain Guils de Cerdanya . In the Carol Valley, the place is between Porté-Puymorens in the north and Latour-de-Carol in the south.
history
The place was founded in 1837 as a new foundation from Latour-de-Carol. In 1860, settlers from Porta founded the village of Porté-Puymorens.
After a bridge was built over the Ariège River and a treaty between France and Andorra was signed, an exchange of territory for a 1.5 hectare piece of land between France and Andorra took place. The French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin , President Jacques Chirac and, on June 28, 2001, the National Assembly approved this exchange of territory . The property is owned by the municipality.
