The canton of Les Pyrénées Catalanes is a French canton in the Prades arrondissement , in the Pyrénées-Orientales department and in the Occitania region ; its main town is Prades .

history

The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. Its communes come from the former cantons of Saillagouse (all 21 communes), Mont-Louis (all 15 communes), Prades (14 of the 20 communes) and Olette (12 of the 15 communes) ).

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the five candidate pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the pairing Jean Castex / Hélène Josende (both UD) won against Georges Armengol / Eliane Jarycki (both PS ) with a share of the vote of 58.30% (turnout: 58.98%).
