history

The canton was created when the French cantons were redistributed in 2015. Its communes come from the former cantons of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet (all 11 communes), Sournia (all 11 communes), Latour-de-France (all 10 communes) and Rivesaltes (6 of the 8 municipalities).

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the four candidate pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, Lola Beuze / Charles Chivilo (both UG) won against André Bascou / Marie-Claude Conte Gregoire (both DVD ) and Florence Jurado / Robert Olives (both FN ) with a share of the votes of 36.95 % (Turnout: 62.45%).
