Ax-les-Thermes lies at an altitude of 720 m at the confluence of the Ariège , Oriège and Lauze . The National Route 20 crosses the municipality. The municipality extends over 30.26 km² of municipal area.

Due to its location in the Pyrenees below Ax-3 Domaines , the place has already been the destination seven times and the starting point of a Tour de France stage six times ; most recently at the 12th stage of the Tour de France 2010 .
