Vernajoul ( Occitan : Vernajol ) is a French commune with 654 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Foix , the community association Pays Foix-Varilhes and the canton Val d'Ariège (until 2015: canton Foix-Rural ). The inhabitants are called Vernajouliens / Vernajouliennes .
geography
Vernajoul is located around 70 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Toulouse in the center of the Ariège department near the small town of Foix . The municipality consists of the village Vernajoul, which consists of several districts, a few hamlets and scattered settlements as well as individual farms. The municipality is located on the eastern border of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The highest point in the municipality is the Rec de la Coume near Lizonne. The village of Vernajoul is west of the Ariège and in terms of traffic on the D231. The N20 from Paris to Spain runs east of the municipality.
Vernajoul is surrounded by the neighboring communities Loubières in the north, Crampagna in the northeast, Foix in the east and southeast, Cos in the southwest and west and Baulou in the west and northwest.
history
The place was first mentioned in a deed of donation from Roger de Carcassonne to the monastery of Saint-Volusiens (in Foix) in 1012. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Foix , which was a crown domain of the King of France from 1607 until the French Revolution . From 1793 to 1801 the community belonged to the Tarascon district. In addition, Vernajoul was from 1793 to 1984 within the canton of Foix and from 1984 to 2015 within the canton of Foix-Rural . The municipality has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Foix since 1801. Between 1790 and 1794 Vernajoul united with the municipalities of La Bouiche (now Labouiche) and Loubières . A few years later, Loubières became an independent municipality again.
