Saint-Martin-de-Caralp ( Occitan : Sent Martin de Caralp ) is a French commune with 357 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ariège department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the Arrondissement Foix , the community association Pays Foix-Varilhes and the canton Val d'Ariège (until 2015: canton Foix-Rural ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Martinalpois / Saint-Martinalpoises .

geography

Saint-Martin-de-Caralp is located around 69 kilometers south of the city of Toulouse in the center of the Ariège department near the small town of Foix . The community consists of the village of Saint-Martin-de-Caralp, the hamlets of Ourdenac and Tresbens , scattered settlements and individual farms. The municipality is located in the Massif de Plantaurel within the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park . Large parts of the community are forested. The highest point in the municipality is Montcoustan in the west of the municipality. The Roc de Caralp (also called Lion de Caralp) in the east of the municipality is considered the center of the Ariège department. In terms of traffic, the place is on the D45 a few kilometers west of the N20 from Paris to Spain.

Saint-Martin-de-Caralp is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Baulou in the north and north-east, Cos in the east, Saint-Pierre-de-Rivière in the south, Serres-sur-Arget in the south-west and west and Cadarcet in the west and north-west.

history

An inhabited cave from the Stone Age is evidence of early settlement. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Foix , which was a crown domain of the King of France from 1607 until the French Revolution . From 1793 to 1801 the community belonged to the Tarascon district. In addition, Saint-Martin-de-Caralp was within the canton of Foix from 1793 to 1984 and within the canton of Foix-Rural from 1984 to 2015 . The municipality has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Foix since 1801.
