Surba is a French commune with 325 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the canton of Sabarthès in the Arrondissement of Foix . It is located at an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level in the Ariège department in the Occitania region . The municipality is part of the Pyrénées Ariégeoises Regional Nature Park .
geography
Surba is located in the Courbière Valley ( Vallée de la Courbière ). In the east, the municipality extends as far as the Ariège river . The next places are Banat about one kilometer southwest and Quié about two kilometers southeast of Surba. The Courbière River flows in a west-east direction through the southern part of Surba. To the north of Surba, right on the town limit, the rock face of Le Sédour rises up and reaches 1045 meters above sea level; the mountain practically shields the place from the north. Tarascon-sur-Ariège , the capital of the canton of the same name, is located about three kilometers southeast of Surba.

history
The earliest mention is from 961 as Sdrebane . In 1375 Surba is recorded as Soyrebano, 1390 as Soyriba, 1445 as Sorba, 1450 as Sobira. From the French Revolution , Surbo established itself. It is not yet clear whether the name of the Courbière river is related to the name Surba.
Another attraction of the municipality is the Romanesque church of St. Nikolaos , built in the 11th century . This is mentioned in writing in 1375 as sancti Nicholay de Soyrebano .
