The proportion of forest in the 18.39 km² community is almost 50%; in the south there are some peaks at or above the tree line . The mountain regions of the municipality are not accessible by roads, there are only paths and hiking trails - among other things, the long-distance hiking trail GR 107 leads through the mountains.

Orgeix borders in the north on Ascou , in the east on Orlu , in the south and west on Mérens-les-Vals and in the north-west on Ax-les-Thermes .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1272 under the name Orgeys . In 1446 Orgeix and the surrounding area belonged to a Niort family that was dependent on the Counts of Foix . In 1559 the Countess Jeanne d'Albret sold the village to Raymond Munier , a merchant from Ax-les-Thermes. From the beginning of the 17th century, Orgeix became a co-seigneurie before falling into the hands of the de Thonel family . King Louis XVIII appointed Jean François Joseph de Thonel as Marquis d'Orgeix in 1817 . The existence of a blacksmith's shop, which was important for the development of the village, has been handed down for the year 1772.

During the First World War six residents of the community were killed, during the Second World War there was only one victim, Emmanuel de Thonel (the Marquis d'Orgeix), who was killed by the Germans for an act of resistance.

On June 5, 1938, the village was shelled by nine unknown three-engine aircraft from the Spanish Civil War. 24 bombs were dropped, but there were no casualties, only the high-voltage line through the Pyrenees was interrupted.

In 1941 a dam with a small hydroelectric power station was built in Orgeix.

Economy and Infrastructure

Tourism plays an important role in the municipality, several holiday houses and pensions are mainly used as accommodation for mountain hikers and visitors to the nearby spa town of Ax-les-Thermes . The municipality does not offer a winter sports infrastructure. The small hydropower plant on the Lac de Campauleil reservoir achieves an output of 19 gWh. The altitude of over 800 m in the Oriègetal does not allow for economic arable farming. In the municipality of Orgeix there are three cattle breeding farms (cattle, sheep, goats) that operate alpine pastures .

The Oriège Valley is a dead end for road traffic . All traffic runs through the small town of Ax-les-Thermes, located three and a half kilometers to the west. There is a connection to the Route nationale 20 ( E 9 ) from Tarascon-sur-Ariège to Puigcerdà in Catalonia, which follows the Ariège river . Ax-les-Thermes train station is on the Portet-Saint-Simon- Puigcerdà railway line .
